Client Crashes & Lag (Allocate More RAM)

If your game crashes to desktop or lags heavily with mods, it likely needs more RAM. You can fix this by editing the game configuration. Locate the ProjectZomboid64.json (Windows) or Info.plist (macOS) file and increase the -Xms (minimum RAM) and -Xmx (maximum RAM) values, e.g., to -Xms1800m and -Xmx4096m.

Paths: Windows (Steam\steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid\ProjectZomboid64.json), macOS (/Users/{Your_User}/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/ProjectZomboid/Project Zomboid.app/Contents/Info.plist). WARNING: Don't allocate more than 3GB if you only have 8GB of system RAM! Remember to save the file. Game updates may reset these settings.

Black Screen on Startup (B42)

Sometimes the new B42 version loses resolution or refresh rate settings on certain monitors. Open Game Properties on Steam and in 'Launch Options' type: -window. After successfully starting, go into the in-game display options, change it to 'Borderless Window', save, and remove the start parameter from Steam after closing the game.

Crashing at "This is how you died" or Map Load

The most common problem after moving from B41 to B42 is conflict with old config files. The solution is to manually clear the game profile folder: navigate to your profile directory (e.g., C:\Users\[Your User]\Zomboid). If you want to keep old singleplayer saves, copy the 'Saves' folder to a safe location, and then delete ALL remaining contents of the 'Zomboid' folder. Restart the game.

This folder will automatically regenerate, getting rid of any faulty configurations. Highly recommended fix from the Reddit community!

Red Error Boxes or Missing UI

This is almost always caused by incompatible, outdated mods. Unstable B42 drastically changes the game engine, making B41 mods break the game. Just disabling them in the main menu is not enough. Go to Steam Workshop, click 'Unsubscribe from all', and then subscribe ONLY to our current server collection linked in the join guide.

Graphic Crashes and the -debug parameter

If the game randomly closes without an error, open game properties on Steam and make sure you do NOT have the -debug parameter active. In Multiplayer, this causes massive instability for many players. If that doesn't help, try forcing a newer rendering API by adding the launch parameter: -dx11.

If all else fails, you can find the 'console.txt' file in your Zomboid folder. The very bottom of it usually lists the exact cause of the crash – send it to us via a Discord ticket!

Better Polish Localization

If you play the game in Polish and notice missing characters or incomplete translations, highly consider subscribing to the dedicated Polish translation fix mod on the Steam Workshop. It works on Multiplayer servers too!

For Multiplayer, make sure to read the installation instructions on the Workshop page.

Managing Your Health

Health is your most important resource. Constantly monitor hunger, thirst, fatigue, and mental state. Eat regularly, drink clean water, and sleep in a safe place to stay combat-ready.

Defending Against Zombies

Rule number one: avoid fights, especially against large groups. Always carry a melee weapon, but use firearms with extreme caution.

WARNING: Gunshots act like a dinner bell — they'll instantly draw every nearby zombie.

Horde Management

If pinned by a large group, don't fight to the death. Use noise (shouting, radio, car horn) to pull them to one spot, then slip away silently breaking line of sight.

Building Shelter

A base is the foundation of survival. Find or build solid shelter against bites and weather. Barricade windows, reinforce doors with planks and nails, and stock canned food and rain barrels for long hideouts.

Cooperating with Other Players

zomboid.pl is built for cooperation. Lone wolves die fast. Team up, share loot, cover each other's backs, and combine crafting skills. Form a faction and survive this harsh world together.
